Some repositories trend because they do something genuinely new. Others trend because they promise to remove a cost that everyone has. Alishahryar1/free-claude-code is firmly in the second category, and it is worth describing accurately rather than repeating its marketing.

TL;DR: free-claude-code is a Python CLI that puts several AI coding harnesses behind one interface and advertises free token access. It has 59,183 stars and 9,319 forks. Its licence is not one GitHub recognises, which is the first thing to check.

What the project claims

The repository description is long, and the claims in it are the project owner’s, not verified findings. It says the tool lets you use Claude Code, Codex, VSCode, Pi, and OpenCode, plus six other harnesses, for free, and cites “1.3B+ free tokens”. It further claims access from a terminal, an app, an IDE, or a phone, and now from the browser with native browser sessions, and it describes itself as “ToS friendly” and voice supported.

That is a lot of surface area for a repository that is under a year old. It was created on January 28, 2026 and last pushed on October 12, 2026, so it is roughly eight and a half months old with 303 open issues.

The two things to check first

Licence. GitHub’s licence detector returns NOASSERTION, meaning it did not match a standard SPDX identifier. For a tool whose stated purpose is to route traffic to other companies’ paid services, the absence of a detected licence is not a formality. If you intend to read the source, modify it, or run it on a work machine, read the licence files yourself first.

The mechanism. Nothing in the repository metadata explains how free token access is provided, and this post does not speculate about it. Any answer to that question has to come from reading the source and, more importantly, from the terms of the upstream services it routes to.

What the growth pattern says

Nearly 16 percent of stargazers have forked it, which is high for a CLI. Combined with 59,183 stars accumulated in under a year, that pattern reads like a tool people wanted to inspect and adjust rather than merely adopt.

The same caution applies in reverse: star growth of this speed on a promise like this one is not a trust signal. It is a measure of attention.

When it is worth looking at

The multi-harness framing is the genuinely interesting engineering idea here, independent of how the free access works. Being able to reach several coding agents from one interface, on a phone as well as a desktop, is a real convenience if the routing layer is well built.

If you are curious about that layer, the fork ratio suggests plenty of people have already been reading it.

When NOT to use it

Do not install this on a work machine before you have read the source and you have checked the terms of service of every upstream service it connects to. A tool that intermediates someone else’s paid API will generally inherit restrictions from that service, and the repository asserting that it is compliant is not the same as the upstream service agreeing to it.

There is also no homepage URL registered on the repository and no declared topics, so the repository is the entire public surface. That is worth factoring into how much trust you extend.

Source and Accuracy Notes

  • Source repository: Alishahryar1/free-claude-code (verified via GitHub API html_url)
  • Licence: NOASSERTION, GitHub did not match a standard SPDX identifier (verified via GitHub API license.spdx_id)
  • Stars at time of writing: 59183
  • Forks at time of writing: 9319, open issues: 303

  • The repository declares no topics and no homepage as of 2026-10-13
  • Feature, token-count, and terms-of-service claims quoted above are the repository owner’s descriptions. They were not independently verified, and no README or source inspection was performed for this post.
  • Star and fork counts were read from the GitHub API on 2026-10-13 and will drift.
