TL;DR: anthropics/claude-code is Anthropic’s official agentic coding tool that runs in your terminal, understands your codebase, and executes routine engineering tasks. TypeScript, 145,541 stars, and the canonical Claude CLI.

What it is

anthropics/claude-code describes itself as “Claude Code is an agentic coding tool that lives in your terminal, understands your codebase, and helps you code faster by executing routine tasks, explaining code, and handling git workflows.” The repo lives under the anthropics GitHub organisation, the language is TypeScript, the repository has 145,541 stars and 23,488 forks, and the homepage is https://code.claude.com/docs/en/overview. The license field is None in the GitHub API response, which means the upstream has not published a top-level LICENSE file in the form GitHub’s license detector recognises — commercial usage terms live in Anthropic’s published terms of service rather than an OSS license.

What it does well

Claude Code is the reference point against which other terminal coding agents are measured, and the public metrics show the scale of the community around it.

  • Terminal-native. No IDE plugin is required. You launch Claude Code inside a project directory and it picks up the codebase from there.
  • Codebase-aware. The agent reads and edits files in place, runs shell commands, and orchestrates routine engineering work without leaving the terminal.
  • Git-aware. Routine git workflows — commit message drafting, branch management, diff summarisation — are first-class, which is where a lot of the time savings come from in practice.
  • Officially maintained. Because Anthropic maintains the repo directly, the agent tracks the latest Claude model behaviour rather than lagging behind a third-party wrapper.

How to try it

The install path is documented at the homepage; for a quick start:

# install via the official installer (see docs for current flags)
curl -fsSL https://claude.com/install.sh | sh
cd your-project
claude

From there the agent enters its interactive loop and operates against the files in the current directory.

When it fits, and when it doesn’t

Claude Code fits any developer who already prefers the terminal over a graphical IDE and wants the agent to operate in the same environment. It is less attractive if you have committed to a hosted IDE that does not surface external CLI tools, or if you are barred by your organisation from sending code context to Anthropic’s API.

The 145k star count is the single largest signal in this corner of GitHub, and the homepage being separate from the repo suggests Anthropic treats this as a product surface, not just an open-source experiment.
